Scientific and technical future of the NRT

In November 2006, the objectives of the panel of experts that were asked to report on the mid to long term perspectives of the NRT were defined as follows by the President of the Paris Observatory and the scientific director of INSU for Astronomy:
  1. Evaluation of the planned scientific program 2007 -2011, on the basis of the RT white paper on one hand and in the international context on the other hand, with the assumption that the telescope operation remains unchanged, with respect to the present use.
  2. Recommendations for the future beyond 2011, in relation with the development and likely construction of the Square Kilometer Array.
  3. To examine the possibility of making the RT function at a reduced cost (for example, with a lower number of hours/day and/or days/week, stopping it at weekend and during vacations, etc) and its impact on the scientific programs.
  4. Recommendations on the classifications of the scientific programs in order of priority within the point 3) above.
  5. Evaluation of the role of the RT as support of the R&D activities carried out at Nanšay and the needs of those activities in dedicated operational time and time of observations with the RT.
The Evaluation Committee met on April 19th and 20th, 2007. The Chair was Prof. Nichi D'Amico of Cagliari University (Italy).
